Abigail's Review:
O'Henry's classic story was one of my favorites growing up. A young wife and husband both struggle to find the perfect gift for one another amidst financial difficulty. Their sacrifice of love for one another is a beautiful story of giving. When I discovered this beautifully illustrated version, I knew it was perfect to add to my family's Christmas treasury. We always read it early in the season to set our hearts' focus on the spirit of true giving.

The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey
By Susan Wojciechowski

Price: $13.29      TO ORDER, CLICK HERE

Abigail's Review:
In this wonderful Christmas book, an angry woodcarver, Jonathan Toomey, is the village Scrooge -- a grouchy recluse the children call "Mr. Gloomy." He isn't an old man, but his attitude gives him a sour, decrepit appearance, preventing people from wanting to get close enough to learn anything about him, including the secret burden he carries. The "Christmas Miracle" for Jonathan Toomey begins when a young widow and her son come to the woodcarver asking for his help in carving a lost figurine for a beloved nativity the Widow McDowell's grandfather had carved for her as a girl. The widow and her seven-year-old son have an impact on the woodcarver that transforms their own Christmas celebration in a magical way. The illustrations in this book are as beautiful as the story itself, and it brings the Christmas message of love and hope home to us all. My only caution? Have a box of tissue handy as you read it!

Gertrude Himmelfarb provides the reader with an enlightening look at the changes in culture that have reduced Victorian virtues such as respectability, self-help, philanthropy, discipline, cooperation, cleanliness, obedience, and orderliness to the watered-down, meaningless "values" of the twenty-first century. Abigail's Review:
Dressmaker patterns for the fifty-nine garments shown in picture within this book originally came from 1890s quarterly issues of "The Voice of Fashion." Although the average seamstress of today would find it a major challenge to enlarge and use the patterns to re-create the fashions of yesteryear, the pictures and descriptions are invaluable. Costume enthusiasts interested in recreating EXACT copies of the vintage styles shown will find this an indispensable guide.

Victorian Era-Inspired Fiction

Time and Again
By Jack Finney

Price: $10.40         TO ORDER, CLICK HERE

Abigail's Review:
Time and Again is one of the favorites on my shelf. I have probably read it at least fifty times since purchasing it shortly after it was written in 1970. Jack Finney has masterfully blended mystery, time-travel and romance within a historically accurate New York of the 1880s. Simon Morley, an illustrator who specializes in advertising art, is asked to join a government program involving time travel. At first dubious, Si becomes intrigued with the possibilities -- especially when he discovers a bit of a mystery he would love to have the chance to research. The moving story, replete with suspense and romance, makes the book hard to put down just for the plot alone. However, Si Morley's first-person descriptions of 1882 New York are spellbinding. The reader feels as though they are seeing all the sights and sound of yesteryear right along with him. A must read for anyone intrigued with the 19th Century.

Cater Street Hangman NEW
By Anne Perry

Price: $6.99        TO ORDER, CLICK HERE

Abigail's Review:
If you love historical fiction and murder mysteries, you will thoroughly enjoy taking up Anne Perry's "Charlotte and Inspector Thomas Pitt" series set in the 1880s, the first book of which is the "Cater Street Hangman." It is in this first novel of the series that we are introduced to Charlotte Ellison, the middle daughter of a successful London banker, as she is thrown into contact with the lowly police inspector, Thomas Pitt, who is investigating a murder by strangulation in her neighborhood. As more and more young women are found mysteriously murdered by the serial killer known as the "Cater Street Hangman," Charlotte finds herself inextricably drawn into helping the inspector. She also finds herself helplessly attracted to Thomas Pitt, setting the stage for a duo that will sleuth their way through many more crimes in the books that follow in the series. Perry's characters are complex individuals with intriguing flaws and weaknesses. She is a masterful storyteller, very well acquainted with the importance of historical accuracy. Fascinating reading for the Victorian-era enthusiast!

Victorian Etiquette and Manners

Back to Virtue: Traditional Moral Wisdom for Modern Moral Confusion NEW
By Peter Kreeft (1992)

Abigail's Review:
In answering his opening question, "Is virtue out of date?" Peter Kreeft reveals just how far our civilization has drifted and why we desperately need to recover moral vision in western culture today. With a contrast between the biblical virtues known as the "Beatitudes" and the vices known as the "Seven Deadly Sins," he presents a clear road map concerning right and wrong to confront the moral trumoil that presently surrounds us. This book is well worth its weight in gold, and a fine introduction on rediscovering the benefits of getting "back to virtue."
