#1001                 5" Crazy Quilt Heart Pattern

Crazy Quilting was a domestic art form of the Victorian era, reaching its zenith in popularity in the 1890s. It was a means to show off a woman's skill with "fancywork" (skill with a needle, including a variety of embroidery stitches). Leftover fabric scraps from splendid ball gowns, dinner gowns, and other luxurious materials of all shades and hues, weights and textures were used in a haphazard or "crazed" pattern, patched randomly over a foundation fabric. Different from other forms of patchwork quilting where pieces needed to be cut exactly to fit together into precisely patterned blocks, each piece within a crazy quilt was creatively stitched and trimmed as the artist worked along. After patching, each seam was covered with embroidery. For women with more leisure time, not only the seams were embellished, but designs of all kinds were painstakingly stitched within the patches as well.

Random crazy quilt patching of a host of hodgepodge colors and textures takes some patience. It requires breaking free form the more orthodox quilt techniques of precision. This crazy quilt pattern will provide you with a guided introduction to this fascinating art.
